Every day offers a new opportunity to learn something new. What new information or skill have you learned recently?
Employers place tremendous value on employees who have curiosity and ask questions to seek out information. Lifelong learning can make us more interesting as human beings, more valuable as employees, and more respected as citizens as we contribute to society.
Employers are seeking employees who can problem-solve, think critically, and communicate effectively. How are you developing and improving these skills?
Over the years, I have embraced learning, deliberately worked to seek out opportunities, created new experiences, and married my skills to a career where I would not just survive but thrive. Working as an executive assistant has offered me the opportunities to learn new technologies, to learn how business operates, to collaborate with others, and to support leaders and executives.
Whether you choose to take a class, volunteer, watch a documentary, read an article, watch a video, or talk with others, there are countless opportunities within a day to learn something new.
For me lifelong learning is not an option. If I want to stay competitive in today’s job market, lifelong learning is a necessity! I have a long working career ahead! Periodically, I scan job descriptions and job ads not necessarily looking for a new position but using my curiosity to learn what educational and skill requirements employers are seeking as they recruit administrative professionals to fill vacant positions.
Are your skills in alignment with what employers are seeking today? How have you worked to acquire added education, gain experience, and learn the skills that will help to differentiate you from other candidates applying for the same position?
My journey of lifelong learning has been filled with education, seizing opportunities, taking risks, taking on new responsibilities, and having a can-do attitude. Sure, there are times when it’s been tough to learn something new, uncomfortable to try something new, and scary to explore something new. However, I keep in mind that my passion for lifelong learning will help me to grow both in my professional and personal life.
