The Working Daughter

January 12, 2020 by Stacy

It’s unconditional. Yet, at times being a working daughter can be complicated. Managing your career as your parents age can be hard.

When you’re young, parents call the shots. As parents age, they may need some ‘extra’ help.

My parents retired nearly two decades ago. During their 40-year working career, rarely did they miss work. Since retirement, they have had their share of health-related issues. From a car accident that resulted in a recovery in ICU, to breast cancer and radiation treatments, numerous joint replacements and other surgeries, it’s been a whirlwind of events.

Over the years, my sisters and I have traveled from out-of-town and out-of-state to lend a helping hand to assist our parents. Our professional and personal commitments are many. We have learned to divide and conquer the To-Do List. We stagger our visits and use many of our vacation days to sit with our parents in hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, and to assist in their home. We spend our weekends with them. We have complemented our regular visits to home with in-home care support.

We don’t have resentment or regrets. This is a special time to give back and to support the very people who have loved us unconditionally and given us life—our parents.

As I share my personal journey in this post, I am thankful for all the professional development training and skills I have acquired over the years. This training has prepared me to be a better equipped team player on one of the most important teams I am a part of “my family.”

Over the years, I have developed good leadership, time management, communication, listening, conflict resolution, and organizational skills. I have acquired empathy and understanding. This knowledge and these skills are so helpful both at work and at home.

Over time my family has learned to unite together and work together. It takes hard work. We have different opinions, we listen. We identify what needs to get done. We divide and conquer based on our individual strengths and schedules. My dad has nicknamed my sister and I “bulldog #1 and bulldog #2” because of our tenacity to get stuff done. We have learned a lot about Medicare, short and long-term healthcare, in-home care options, and their day-to-day living. We have been open and honest in our frequent, ongoing communication with one another. We see the benefits of regular family council meetings utilizing technology to share information, address questions, get answers, and make unified decisions.

Our journey as a family on this road less traveled can be hard at times. It’s unique. It’s special. I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know this working daughter is grateful to be on a great team! Go Team Leitner!

The sharing economy has evolved beyond car rides and used clothing and has arrived at the office building – but what does that mean for your training sessions?

In fact, both companies and employees alike can not only benefit from but genuinely enjoy offsite meetings, even when training is something they viewed previously as boring. It’s obvious why these meetings are popular – but are they worth more than the typical boardroom training session. [Read more…] about How Going Off-site Can Improve Meetings and Training Sessions

See Life as a Journey, Your Journey

August 4, 2016 by Stacy

47396749 - see life as journey - inspiration phrase on a slate blackboard with chalk and cup of tea

I am thankful that life did not turn out the way I had planned.  Why?  The life I had planned for myself when I was a teenager would have been so boring!  I would have married the wrong guy (trust me, he was the wrong guy), and I would have limited myself in so many ways.

My journey into adulthood began in 1991 after graduating from high school.  I enrolled at a local community college and worked two part-time jobs.  Several weeks into my first college semester, I received a confirmation by mail that I had been accepted by an out-of-state college.  I moved the following semester.  My parents bought me luggage, a one-way airplane ticket, a Greyhound Bus ticket, and sent me off in the dead of winter to Rexburg, Idaho.  With no car, no cell phone, and two suitcases in tow, I was dropped off late one evening by a shuttle driver outside my college dorm. We have the opportunity and responsibility to be involved in a variety of communities that impact our world today.  What community resonates with your heart?

I have a deep appreciation for leaders who choose to serve in public office to support local, regional, state, and national governance.  I care about the participation, engagement, and leadership within associations, churches, non-profit organizations, businesses, and governments.  I admire individuals who look beyond what they can receive to focus on what they can give.  I am thankful for people who choose to give of their time and resources to support good causes, events, and have a positive impact in the world we live in. 5 Apps to Help Increase Your Productivity

June 1, 2016 by Stacy

AppsToday’s working professional needs to embrace technology not run from it. One of the greatest challenges faced by administrative professionals in today’s workplace is their capacity to accept and adapt to the advances in technology.

Apps have become one of my new best time-saving technology tools. What is an app anyway? By definition an app (shortened to refer to the word application) is a computer program that will run on a smartphone, tablet, or other mobile device.  Apps are available for download on the device (often times for free) typically through the owner of the mobile operating system (e.g. Apple App Store, Google Play, etc.).

With the rising popularity of individuals downloading apps, the world is seeing a shift toward an increase in mobile computing.  Mobile apps can be a huge timesaver for working professionals. Because of my work demands I need to save minutes whenever I can. [Read more…] about 5 Apps to Help Increase Your Productivity
