In honor of a recent birthday celebration, I created a list of the 40 things I know after four decades of living. These 40 suggestions have helped me to enjoy a great day’s work.
- Choose a career you enjoy!
- Make good, informed decisions. Decisions (good or bad) may impact the rest of your life.
- Get the right people on your various teams.
- Do more than is expected.
- Happiness is a choice and can be created each day.
- Ask questions and be curious.
- Grab hold of responsibilities in the workplace and own them.
- Take good care of you. It’s no one else’s responsibility but your own.
- Care about family, coworkers, and people.
- Keep learning new technologies.
- Be a good listener.
- Help others to be successful.
- Keep yourself advancing so you can reach your greatest potential.
- Create ways to have fun at work.
- Create friendships at work.
- Show gratitude in the workplace.
- Empower those around you.
- Don’t hold onto information that can be shared with others.
- Learn to delegate.
- Build your network by finding ways to meet new people.
- Say, “Yes!” to new opportunities.
- Don’t say, “I’ll try.” Instead say, “Sure, no problem” and figure it out.
- Own your mistakes.
- Pay yourself first by saving and investing your resources.
- Create value in the workplace by being involved in more than you were hired to do.
- Be engaged in “A Great Day’s Work” while at work.
- Find ways to promote your employer and his/her business.
- Dream BIG and then make it happen.
- Be flexible.
- Each and every day counts.
- Discuss and resolve conflicts.
- Communication in the workplace is KEY!
- Generate ideas and share them at work.
- Do not fall behind or delegate filing.
- The more email you send, the more email you receive.
- Choose to not be passive or aggressive. Choose to be assertive.
- Seek leadership positions.
- Confront any fear of public speaking and get over it.
- Take notes.
- Seek a mentor who will encourage you and hold you accountable.
